For those of you that don’t already know: Mozilla Thunderbird is an E-mail client, just like Outlook, except its free. That’s pretty much it. The only real difference is the UI, it just looks different but functions the same way. Especially the new 3.0 beta, which has more added features and an improved UI. One of the greatest features of OS X that is missing an alternative in Windows is the Exposé feature. For those that don’t know what the Exposé feature in OS X is, it “…allows a user to quickly locate an open window, or to hide all windows and show the desktop without the need to click through many windows to find a specific target.” [Wikipedia - Exposé (Mac OS X)]. In windows 7 there are features included (Aero Peek and the Show Desktop Button) that ultimately provides the same service as Exposé but it is not done in the same way. Previously I have shown how to Install Portable Apps on your flash drive as well as How to Create a Virtual Machine on Your Computer. Today I will be showing you a mix of the two, How to Use Virtualization on the Go. The reason this is so convenient is that you can take your whole OS with you and have any program, not just portable ones, at your side at any time at all. The three programs I will be showing you today all have their own advantages and disadvantages when it comes to portable O.S’s.
First is Portable VirtualBox from vbox.me which is exactly the same as the normal VirtualBox but can run on your flash drive without an install, the install process for it is somewhat confusing though. Unfortunately it requires Administrator access to run so can not be used in many situations.
Second is QEmu Manager. Apparently VirtualBox is built off this program’s framework but with a different GUI and some more features. The GUI actually resembles VMWare to an extent with it’s button based top tool-bar and sidebar. This software does not have need to have Admin access so can be run on any PC. The only downside I have found is that loading times can be slow, sometimes extremely.
Finally is Mojopac, this one is my favorite of all. While it can only run on Windows XP for the time being, it works wonders. Mojopac actually holds its own physical OS on you flash drive, not a virtual machine. It does however use some of the host OS’s resources but has its own registry, meaning you can install any program on it and take it with you, even games! You can bring all your music in iTunes, or play Crysis if the host computer can run it. Even through all of this it still leaves no trace on the host computer and you can easily switch from guest to host. Also, you will not recieve lag when using Mojopac as you do in Virtual Machines, another advantage of using the host system’s resources.
Now you can easily take your Windows Install, Linux Distro, or software including games with you anywhere as long as your flash drive can accommodate the space. Depending on your situation you can choose what you can work with and what advantages you need and which disadvantages you can live with.

You’ve probably heard of Linux, if you haven’t you probably don’t belong on this site. If you haven’t heard of Linux maybe “Ubuntu” sounds familiar. No? Well whether or not you’ve heard of it, you really should try it. At least, according to a post on Overclock.net. This post, which currently has 117 pages of replies btw by the way, is a complete argument about why a common Windows user should really consider trying Linux as a full time alternative to Windows. It actually has a challenge included, it challenges the reader to choose a Linux distro of their choice, it of course recommends Ubuntu, and dual boot it with their Windows install. You must then take the time to properly set it up (installing all your programs, adding all your Firefox add-ons and bookmarks, etc.) and then run it for a few weeks without booting into Windows unless you absolutely have to and see if you want to go back. I would bet that quite a few of you would choose to dual boot all the time or maybe even run Linux exclusively. Give it a try!

Something that can grab a readers attention on your blog is an elegant banner. That’s only one of the many things you can do with some excellent text. The ability to create some beautiful text will come in handy more times than you will be able to count. I use the free software GIMP to create my text and today I’m showing you how I do it. With GIMP you can create nice gradients for your text with your own custom colors as well as with several other integrated schemes. You can also add effects to your text such as waves or wind and of course you can drop a nice shadow. Plus there is much much more with all the included filters. GIMP is one of the best image tools around in my opinion and can give you professional results for free!

There has been a lot of talk lately about the potential redesign that the Firefox may undergo during the 3.7 or 4.0 update. The UI appears to completely redesigned in the mock-ups posted on the Mozilla Wiki. For a quick example of what we’re talking about here is an all around picture of the basic idea of the UI:

Now: my thoughts.
I have to say I have very mixed feelings about the redesign. The UI is a mix between IE8 and Chrome. Both browsers I have not been very impressed with thus far, not necessarily for design but performance reasons. But why does Mozilla want to associate their amazing browser with such ones less impressive as their own?
The bookmarks bar is not included by default in the mock-ups but it may be replaced by a bookmarks menu as shown in the tabs-on-bottom preview although not on the tabs-on-top, I feel that with this new design a bookmarks bar would clash with the rest of the design but I would be ok if the menu bar was included. If the bookmarks menu were left out that would a serious flaw in my opinion as i use the bookmarks bar everyday.
The only thing that I have to say that I completely dislike is the tabs-on-top version. I have used the Safari 4 beta and Chrome and have to say I find the idea of having the tabs on top very misguided. When I use a browser I like to have everything I use often right at hand, and obviously tabs are used most often than really anything else in the browser. Most of the time when browsing the web the mouse is within the webpage, either clicking on links or scrolling. With the tabs right above the webpage its never hard to open a new tab, its right there. With the tabs on top of the browser that means moving the mouse further to get to the tabs, and that’s it. I can see no advantage for the user to have the tabs further away, and that is something I never liked about Chrome or Safari 4 beta. Plus, I’m pretty sure Apple had a good reason for removing the tabs-on-top idea from the final version of Safari 4.
I could deal with the tabs-on-bottom version as I, of course, prefer the tabs below and I need the bookmarks menu if the bookmarks menu pulls a Houdini. At this point though, my final opinion is that if it isn’t broken don’t fix it. I love the UI the way it is, its 1/3 of the reason why I prefer Firefox over any other browser (the other two being add-ons and performance). On the last few of my videos you may have noticed, if you are a subscriber or regular viewer of mine, that I recently created a new style of watermark. This new watermark is more of a longer rectangular shape and contains my avatar as well as my website (http://quesomanrulz.com/). I find that I like this watermark much better as it contains information for my website and it contains my avatar which would help it gain a higher profile around the net.
In this video I’m going to be showing how to create and apply your new watermark to be like mine and we are going to do this without any other software than Camtasia Studio which you probably use anyway. So you will not have any need for other expensive software such as Sony Vegas to accomplish this task. By doing it all in Camtasia you can also reduce rendering time by only having to render once as opposed to doing it twice, first with Camtasia and then again with Vegas to get your watermark in place.
It is actually very simple to make a watermark like mine and I figured this out by myself without too much trouble. All you will need is:
