Have you ever heard of vBulletin? It’s considered one of the best CMS’s in existance but it is very expensive. Now, however, it has a competitor! Simple Machines has released a release candidate of the 2.0 version of their forum. In design it is very similar to vBulletin, you can create home pages as well as forums inside the same CMS. It is loaded with settings and is really customizable. Oh, and did I mention that it’s FREE! You should definately check this out if you like lots of settings and customization or if you were considering buying vBulletin.

modxcms bookPreviously I have explained How to Set Up Wordpress and How to Set Up phpBB on your website, today I will be showing you another CMS called MODx. The all the new MODx CMS 1.0 was released out of beta July 30, 2009. The CMS or Content Management System is very similar to Joomla! but with many more settings which makes it optimal for advanced users. The CMS would in most cases be used to create an informational style website but also has features like a blog and the ability to integrate an SMF forum. I would definately recommend it if you feel comfortable with a lot of settings and customization. At least check it out, even if you don’t want to use it now you may be interested in it in the future after it grow more.

linux vs windows The Linux ChallengeYou’ve probably heard of Linux, if you haven’t you probably don’t belong on this site. If you haven’t heard of Linux maybe “Ubuntu” sounds familiar. No? Well whether or not you’ve heard of it, you really should try it. At least, according to a post on Overclock.net. This post, which currently has 117 pages of replies btw by the way, is a complete argument about why a common Windows user should really consider trying Linux as a full time alternative to Windows. It actually has a challenge included, it challenges the reader to choose a Linux distro of their choice, it of course recommends Ubuntu, and dual boot it with their Windows install. You must then take the time to properly set it up (installing all your programs, adding all your Firefox add-ons and bookmarks, etc.) and then run it for a few weeks without booting into Windows unless you absolutely have to and see if you want to go back. I would bet that quite a few of you would choose to dual boot all the time or maybe even run Linux exclusively. Give it a try!

Never been convinced by Linux? Here is a challenge for you. [Overclock.net]

One of the questions I get the most is asking how to connect a website to a DNS domain. When I set up this for this site I too had a problem understanding how these “nameservers” were supposed to work and how to use them. For this very reason, I created this tutorial on how to connect your domain to your website’s hosting.
It’s pretty simple to do this but the method itself is not very clear. If you have further questions about this process you can always ask your questions at http://forum.quesomanrulz.com/.

Something that can grab a readers attention on your blog is an elegant banner. That’s only one of the many things you can do with some excellent text. The ability to create some beautiful text will come in handy more times than you will be able to count. I use the free software GIMP to create my text and today I’m showing you how I do it. With GIMP you can create nice gradients for your text with your own custom colors as well as with several other integrated schemes. You can also add effects to your text such as waves or wind and of course you can drop a nice shadow. Plus there is much much more with all the included filters. GIMP is one of the best image tools around in my opinion and can give you professional results for free!

Something I feel that every blog should have is a contact form so that readers can contact  the writers with comments, or depending on the content of the blog, other things like questions, submitted content, or website bugs. Well, creating a contact form by yourself by just coding is a quite advanced procedure. Luckily there are several services around the internet that are willing to do this service for free. Today we will be using emailmeform.com as it allows you to have the most features for free compared to any other website who has a similar service. I will walk you through the simple process of creating your own custom contact form and then tell you how to apply it to your website. Good Luck, if you have questions about your contact form you can always ask out community at http://forum.quesomanrulz.com/.

By now everyone should be using Firefox, that’s not to say that everyone is (I still haven’t converted all of my family yet) but if you’re not the main thing you’d be missing is the add-ons. While Firefox is one of the most stable browsers around and, next to webkit based browsers, the most speedy, but the one thing that none of the others really have great support for is add-ons. Add-ons make the browsing experience have practically endless possibilities! I use add-ons every day in my Firefox 3.5 install, I simply don’t know how I ever lived without them!

Another great thing about add-ons is that when you get a new one it can sometimes feel like you’ve got a new browser entirely, like you just got a new toy when you were a kid. Add-ons can completely revolutionize enjoyment and productivity when surfing the web. The web browser is no longer just a tool to surf the internet, it can now update your twitter, send text messages, organize your digital life for you and much much more.

All my Add-Ons:

  1. Add N Edit Cookies
  2. AutoPager
  3. Better YouTube

BlindSearch The Search Engine Taste Test

Since the internet took off and became mainstream users have used Search Engines to try and sift out the information that they’re looking for among the massive amounts of information. Today there are 3 main search engines (generally speaking): Google, Yahoo!, and Bing (formerly Live Search). While they all provide good results the thing that makes a person pick one over the other is how often a search engine can consistently provide the relevant results they are looking for. Some people though have always used the same search engine and don’t know that there are better alternatives out there, that’s where BlindSearch comes in.

http://blindsearch.fejus.com/ is a service developed just for fun to allow users to quickly search anything and receive the results from the previously mentioned search engines all on the same page. There you can view the results from each search engine without knowing which results are from which engine and select which one you prefer.

BlindSearch The Search Engine Taste TestIt’s quite a fun way to see how search engines are different and which one provides the results you want the most, you might be surprised at what you find. I was.

html 1024x280 Make Yourself A Webpage Without Coding

Today we live in a day and age where most people have a webpage that they call their own. Whether it be a facebook or myspace page or maybe you blog on blogger. Eventually though, if you are using these services, may decide that you want a website that you can completely call your own. Thats great! The only problem is that you google web page design and are like “I don’t get this htmphpccs thing”. Well don’t be completely dismayed as you have several options. The first would be to read up more on the subject and attempt to teach yourself basic html/php like I did, but for some people this is much easier said than done. There are several options however that can allow average people with an open mind to create a simple webpage of their own.

First of all there are several things you are going to need to read up on and understand. Things like FTP, Database (MySQL to be specific), etc. Another thing to remember in this process is that GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND.

To start off you have several things to consider off the bat. What kind of website are you trying to create? What will make people visit your website? Are you like many other websites out there? Will I be able to put in enough time to keep my site operational? Who will my audience be? How much money are you willing to spend on your site? These are all important questions that you need to base the design of your site around. Now we need to consider different ways to create a website that don’t require much or any code.

The easiest way I find to create a website that requires little coding on your part is to install some sort of software on your site. This site is running WordPress, one of the top blogging softwares available. If you are into a forum sort of setting you might look at phpBB, if you want a site that is mostly informational you might try Joomla!, there are several other options as well.

Another way to create a site is using a site building software. Many hosting services come with them included, many are also available for a small amount of money. When buying a “website building” software it is important to make sure you are purchasing the right type. The kind that you will be interested in if you are anti-code will be a wizard type website creator that asks you questions and builds it for you. Make sure you are getting the right thing or you may end up spending money on something you have no idea how to use.

Finally you could, if your not opposed to spend some good money on the site, hire a professional to design a website for you. You would give him/her some information on how you wanted to site to be designed and they would create it and then give you some options to change and personalize your site. This way costs a good amount of money but can result in a beautiful site and may be a wise choice if your site is trying to bring you money.

In conclusion, the best method that is available for free would be installing a software on your site as it can provide results very similar to what you are looking for and is potentially very customizable. If you wish to have a site that is made to attract many viewers and make money the old saying “you have to spend money to make money” may apply. Regardless, whatever you do decide on make sure you read up on it a lot before you make a decision and along with that remember that the more you know about the subject the more you will be able to make it your own and customize it. Good luck with your website and if you need any help with the process just head over to http://forum.quesomanrulz.com/ where our community will be able to assist you.
